TDLR: I would love a smaller SEG 21L with the security of Pacsafe roobar, exomesh, and the durability of GoRuck bags (cordura 1000D w/rainbag dyneema or xpac)
This is an amazing backpack with “packing cubes” built in. If you are highly organized with your items, clothes, this is the backpack for you. I am currently traveling with this 28L and purposely underpacked prior to the trip. Now the backpack is completely packed with gear purchased along the way: shoes, swimming, snorkeling gear, sandals, raincoat set, etc. I cannot possibly fit anymore items in it. Knowing this, if you are a person who does pick up necessities along the way, one issue I’ve noticed is the stitching is slowly starting to unravel at the seams. I believe $250 is a lot to spend on a backpack. I want it to not fall apart.
Pros: I love the security loops, water resistance zippers, and overall design.
Cons: The pull tabs with nylon and shrink wrap. After traveling, I had a small mishap with my snorkel gear and I believe it was switched out or broken by another traveler. I also noticed the “shrink wrap” was pulled off and slipped back on. I usually keep my bag locked but it is easily undone by simply taking off the shrink wrap and untying the knot. I lock this bag using a 4-Digit Combination Bike Lock — losing keys is easy. I slip the bike loop through the zipper pull after it enters the security loop. The point of weakness is the security loops ability to be cut with a nail clipper or the zipper pull being undone.
I have been looking for something a little more durable for my next trip. I hope Matador may take my thoughts to create the ultimate bag next.
1) Pacsafe, I love the “peace of mind” having the security of the Pacsafe “roobar” system and “exomesh” slash resistance.
2) GR2 Build Quality is over engineered with the 1000D. Heavy is a con, but durability is a plus.
Future Request: 1) Locking Mechanisms for all zippers. I’ve been thinking about using thin steel wire to replace the zipper pulls; however, the point of weakness is probably the nylon security loops itself. Maybe a metal one?
2) Threads. Please double up durability
3) Size, sounds crazy but could it be smaller? 21L?
Minimalism, you travel enough and you understand how you travel. You want something smaller, safer but also more durable. Make one please, SEG design is beautiful. Packing cubes and laundry bag built-in. People buy this backpack to NOT have to purchase extra items. Make it better, smaller. Let’s go :D
Update: I request a better version because I lean towards a GoRuck 18L Double Compartment or GR2 26L. I want something slightly smaller that can be used as “The Ultra Minimalist” essential — travel one bag AND day bag. It’s possible. Matador is close. Give us the best stitching with the best materials available. Make the heirloom backpack that I can pass down a couple decades from now. People want something that will last forever, buy once, last forever.
