Flexible frame suspension

The Beast28 features an innovative spring steel frame, which allows for both structure and packability. The flexible frame suspension provides comfort and torsion with movement, for an agile fit that moves with you and distributes loads evenly. When not in use, simply twist and fold the frame, and secure into the compression sack. The spring steel frame bounces back into its original shape when released.

Wanted to love this bag

I was really excited for this pack because it seemed perfect for long days of peak bagging while carrying extra gear like helmet, axe, crampons, and winter layers. It’s really well made and has great organization options and attachment points.

However it has 2 main flaws that kept me from keeping it. First, the hip belt pockets are pretty small. When the belt is tightened, there’s not much stretch to the pockets and it’s difficult to get items in or out without first loosening the belt. I think this is because the bottom part of the pocket is the same non-stretch nylon as the pack. It would be better if the whole bottom portion was just the stretchy material, which I’ve seen on many other packs.

2nd, and more importantly, the buckles for the side compression straps are just in the worst possible spot. With anything from a small to medium load, they dig into my shoulder blades in an annoying way. When the pack is full, it pushes them out of the way and isn’t an issue, but I don’t want a pack I can only use under specific circumstances. It would be better if the buckles were further away from the back panel.

Maybe I’m in the minority here with how it fits and the buckles don’t affect most people, but sadly it was enough for me to return the pack.

EDC backpack

I bought the previous Beast28 when it didn't have a frame, so it is an upgrade with the frame. It is nice that the waist belt is removable. The new secondary pocket is a nice addition, but the small goods pocket is hidden and oddly placed. It seems like there is space on the outer part of the secondary pocket, but the small goods pocket is in between the main and secondary compartments, so it eats into that space. Overall, I'm still satisfied with the durability and lightweight backpack.
